You are invited to participate in a SAIREC 2015 Side Event “Development of a Biomass Action Plan for Electricity Production in South Africa” (BAPEPSA) organised by the BAPEPSA Joint Development Team.

The BAPEPSA initiative is a government to government co-operation between the Netherlands and South Africa, and is currently in progress. The lead government bodies facilitating this co-operation are South Africa’s Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Department of Energy (DoE) and the Netherland’s Enterprise Agency.

South Africa, through the Integrated Resource Plan 2010-2030 has committed to expanding its current electricity supply system. During this expansion process South Africa intends to diversify its primary energy mix to include a higher level of renewable energy supplies. One of the renewable energy sources that can be used for the provision of both on- and off-grid electricity supply is biomass.

The BAPEPSA initiative is focused on exploring biomass utilisation for electricity generation using woody and agricultural biomass. Its scope includes both on- and off-grid applications for electricity generation. The project will define the requirements for creating an enabling environment for the large scale uptake of forestry and agricultural biomass for electricity production in South Africa. The project will consider current and future biomass potential (local and regional), national strategies and directives, as well as possible solutions to identified barriers to biomass utilisation.

The BAPEPSA Joint Development Team is keen on engaging with industry specialists and interested parties through an open dialogue on Opportunities, Barriers and Solutions for increased Utilization of Biomass for Electricity Production in South Africa. The dialogue will be led by a panel of government and industry experts followed by a Question and Answer session. The information gathered through this dialogue will be used by the BAPEPSA Joint Development Team in the formulation of their final output.
